Cherry Blossoms in Lake Kawaguchiko Japan 2018

This is my second visit around Lake Kawaguchiko. The first time I'm here was around 2nd week of December 2016. This place is memorable to me because it was my very first semi-solo travel. That day, my friends decided to go to the Suicide Forest but that place kind of freaks me out so I went for a different tour. I will never forget how I walked slowly around the lake savoring the air and the magnificent view of Mt. Fuji on a very clear day.

Now the time has come that I can return to Lake Kawaguchiko and it is Spring time! I know the view will be better than the last time because of the flowers!

It was kind of a last minute decision for us. We booked our bus a day before. Planning an itinerary for Spring isn't that easy, you have to continually monitor the status of the place since the flowers usually only lasts for a week in full bloom. If you arrive in Tokyo towards the end of the season, you may try to do a side trip in Lake Kawaguchiko to see the flowers in full bloom because this place is usually a week or more behind vs. Tokyo when it comes to Cherry Blossoms forecast.

Travel Date: April 8, 2018
Weather : Noon time is around 11 degrees

How to go to Lake Kawaguchiko

Going to Lake Kawaguchiko from Tokyo is easy. Probably just a two step process and you are already around the lake.

1. First, you have to reach Kawaguchiko Station. You can reach it by train or by bus. Last 2016, we took the train because we have a JR Pass but if I remember correctly, we made 2 train transfers and we still payed for the last train we transferred to before reaching Kawaguchiko station. This year, we took the bus route. It is convenient as well. Here are the details:

We booked our tickets thru Highway-buses - check their site HERE
Price : Adults 1,750JPY, Children 880JPY
(Travel time: Approx. 1h 45min)
Terminals:
Shibuya Expressway Bus Terminal
Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal

We booked the bus in Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal. It is actually easy to find because there were a lot of signs pointing to 'Express Bus', it is also near the New South Gate exit.

The bus will drop off you right in front of the Kawaguchiko Station.

2. Once you are in Kawaguchiko Station, buy the two-day pass ticket for Lake Kawaguchiko or Red Line. For some reason, they don't have a one-day pass. Anyway, the two-day pass costs 1,500JPY. The red line has 22 stops. I prefer going to the very last station first which is the Natural Living Center and then drop at any station going back to Kawaguchiko station.

Natural Living Center
This is one of the best spots among the red line stops. You can probably stay an hour or more here, depends on how much you would like to take in the scenery or how much pictures you would like to take. :)

During Spring, there are few cherry blossoms on this area but probably not the best one. However, I still think that this stop is a must-see in any season.

After we spent a good an hour and a half in this place, we took the bus again and drop off at stop number 18. This is where we found the best viewing of sakura and Mt. Fuji. You can see families having a picnic under the gorgeous trees and enjoying their food. Most of all, you can see a lot of people holding their cameras and phones trying to capture the beautiful view.

We probably spent around 2 to 3 hours walking around before we head towards the closest bus stop and find some place to eat.

TIP: most of the restaurants around the lake are closed on Sundays so it is best to bring your food and just join the hanami/picnic.

Since we can't find a place to eat because it is Sunday, we head back to Kawaguchiko Station and found a restaurant right across. It has a good view of Mt. Fuji as well. Look! I also got the Sakura Coke can.

All in all, I enjoyed this side-trip very much. I get to enjoy spring and sight of Mt. Fuji all at the same time. Although I wish we packed our lunch and enjoyed hanami along with others. :)
